White stoneware with black sgraffito design.

The term sgraffito comes from the Italian word graffiare, which means "to scratch". Sgraffito is a technique in pottery where glaze is applied and then areas are scratched/removed to reveal a design or pattern.

Kokopelli is a Native American fertility spirit. It was believed that he made the land fertile by dancing and playing his flute. Women asked for help as well. Conversely, some said Kokopelli was a trickster because women discovered they were pregnant after he left.
